Ex Machina is a dark sci-fi thriller with a jarring twist at the end. It plays with the idea of A.I. one day replacing organic humanity, while also hosting a sort of "Elon Musk meets Dr. Frankenstein" villian. Not to mention, the beautiful shots of the Alaskan landscape are also placed in there to throw the viewer off from the darker aspects.
Caleb Smith is the MC of this tale, a programmer who just won a contest at his job that gives him a one-week vacation to the CEO's mansion in Alaska, where he'll get to be the first person to see the Boss' newest project: Ava, the world's first human A.I. Ava is meek and soft-voiced, but also may know some dark secrets about Caleb's Boss, and uses whatever opportunity she can to let Caleb know about this, leaving him confused yet wondering.
This one's a killer thriller for both sci-fi fans AND lovers of drama. They manage to tell an eerie story with very little gore and without redundant shock value. Your partner may even like this film. 10/10.
